About This Companion

The Still Point is an independent reading and reference resource about retreat and contemplative life, with a particular affection for Belize and its Caribbean coast.

What this site is

These pages gather general, educational writing about the contemplative tradition — the kinds of retreat, the practices of silence and spiritual direction, the history of the Mercy movement that shaped so much of the region, and the setting of the Belize coast itself. Everything here is offered freely, for reading only.

What this site is not

The Still Point is not a retreat center, a congregation, or a charity. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or the official website of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mercy Center, the Guadalupe Spiritual Life Centre, the Sisters of Mercy, or any religious congregation or retreat house. We do not accept bookings or registrations, we do not run programs, and we do not solicit or accept donations of any kind. If you are seeking an active retreat center or ministry, please contact that organization directly through its own official channels.

A note on the history pages

Our historical pages — on the Mercy tradition in Belize and the worldwide story of Mercy — are independent summaries compiled from public, encyclopedic sources. They are offered in a spirit of respect for a genuinely notable history, and any errors are our own.

Where the name comes from

The site takes its name from a line in T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets: "at the still point of the turning world." It seemed a fitting title for a resource about drawing back from busyness to pay attention. That, in the end, is all this project hopes to be — a small, quiet doorway into a subject worth slowing down for. You are welcome to read as much or as little as you like, in whatever order you please; nothing here asks anything of you but your attention.
